Prof. Sharman has 30 years of experience in the field of biomedical science, clinical research, and healthcare management. Prof. Sharman advises Kazakhstan’s health minister on a number of health policy issues. He is also the host of television shows and publishes articles and blogs about health and wellness. Due to the current priority with the pandemic, he dedicates most of his programs to educating the public about COVID19 and how to prevent the disease.
Prof. Sharman’s focus is healthcare management and academic medicine in Kazakhstan. He is a current member of the American Public Health Association and President of Kazakhstan Academy of Preventive Medicine. Prof. Sharman designed a technology product, Symptomaster that helps patients assess more than 100 symptoms and make informed decisions about their health. In addition, he developed an extensive medical database of more than 1000 diseases and conditions. Currently, he concentrates his efforts on designing a mobile application called NutriSteppe that motivates users to choose healthy diets. He was the founding CEO of National Medical Holding.
Prof. Sharman is a member of the International Commission on Tuberculosis and co-author of the report entitled “Building a tuberculosis-free world: The Lancet Commission on Tuberculosis”. The report, which was published in the prestigious international medical journal The Lancet, sets out targets to eliminate tuberculosis within a generation. Authors stressed the need for accountability in TB - assessing progress in 10 high-burden countries and announcing the launch of The Lancet TB Observatory—an independent annual report evaluating progress towards the 2022 UN High-Level Meeting targets.
As a philanthropist, Prof. Sharman is Chairman of the Board of Asyl Miras Charity Foundation, providing assistance to children with autism. He is also a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for Spoon Foundation, which addresses nutritional needs of disadvantaged children.
As a researcher, Prof. Sharman designed the methodology for integrated population-based HIV testing, which has become a standard methodology for the international Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS). As an Associate, Prof. Sharman also taught at the Johns Hopkins University’s Bloomberg School of Public Health.
